Steven Gerrard followed in the footsteps of some all-time Liverpool greats when stepping up to collect the PFA Player of the Year award in London last night.Gerrard became the fifth Reds player to win the accolade, emulating the feat of Terry McDermott, Kenny Dalglish and John Barnes. Having won the PFA Young Player of the Year in 2001 it also completed a unique double for the 25-year old Liverpool skipper. LFC's past PFA Players of the YearTerry McDermott (1980)Kenny Dalglish (1983)Ian Rush (1984)John Barnes (1988)"I am still in shock to be honest. If you look at the shortlist, there are five other guys who have so much talent. They are all special players," says Gerrard, who pipped Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Wayne Rooney, Thierry Henry and John Terry to the honour. "I looked at the list of past winners and there are some fantastic names on there – some legends, so I am really proud to have joined them, it's really special. "This caps a great weekend for me, what with getting through to the FA Cup Final and now winning this award. I was genuinely surprised and when you look at the names who have won the award in the past, it is an honour to be mentioned in the same breath as those people." Gerrard, PFA player of the year 2006Gerrard was joined in the PFA Premiership team of the year by Anfield colleague Jamie Carragher. PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor, said of Gerrard: "He's a bit special isn't he? Last year's Champions League Final has to go down as one of the greatest games of all-time - and a combination of Steven's leadership skills and Jamie Carragher's defensive qualities, set up an unlikely Liverpool win, the likes of which I never thought I would see against AC Milan. "It's no surprise that he's been wanted by virtually every manager in the world, but he's remained loyal to Liverpool and I'm really glad they're maintaining their success because that's good for him and good for the club."
